Prepare for CELPIP General with Glossom

Glossom is an English exam prep app for iPhone and iPad. It prepares you for CELPIP General with a daily path to your target level in each skill, six courses, and AI feedback on your speaking and writing.

What CELPIP General tests

CELPIP General is a Canadian English test, used above all for permanent residence in Canada. You take all four skills on a computer, in one sitting of under three hours. There is no examiner: you speak into a microphone and your answers are recorded. The recordings use North American English and everyday situations, like talking with co-workers or following the news.

• ListeningSix parts and 38 questions, from solving a problem in a conversation to following news and discussions.

• ReadingFour parts and 38 questions: letters and emails, a diagram, texts that inform, and texts that give opinions.

• WritingTwo tasks: write an email, and answer a survey question with your choice and your reasons.

• SpeakingEight short tasks, such as giving advice, describing a scene, making a prediction and dealing with a difficult situation, each with a little time to prepare.

Each skill gets its own level, up to 12, and trained raters score writing and speaking. CELPIP levels are the same numbers as the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) that Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) uses: CELPIP 7 is CLB 7.

How Glossom prepares you

Glossom does not copy CELPIP tasks. It builds the four skills CELPIP measures, and the vocabulary and grammar under them, in short sessions every day.

• Emails and opinionsGlossom’s writing tasks include practical messages, such as emails, and short opinions with reasons: the two kinds of writing CELPIP asks for. An AI coach shows what to fix and gives your text back, improved at your level, for you to retype.

• Speaking to a microphoneLike CELPIP, Glossom’s speaking has no examiner: you answer out loud into your phone in about 30 seconds, then read the improved answer aloud. The questions include giving advice and saying what you would do.

• Everyday listeningShort clips, conversations and talks in US and UK voices. CELPIP uses North American English, so the US voices are the closest to it.

• Reading one paragraph at a timeTen paragraphs a set, one question each, with timed and untimed sets.

• A path to your CLB levelSix short timed tests suggest your starting level in each skill. Choose your target CELPIP levels and your daily time, and Glossom shows the date you can reach them.

Glossom has no full CELPIP practice tests. Before your test day, practise the full timed format on a computer too.

Glossom levels and CELPIP levels

Glossom’s CELPIP table uses Canada’s own table of the CLB level each IELTS General Training band reaches, skill by skill. That table stops at CLB 10, so Glossom puts CELPIP 11 at IELTS 8.5 and CELPIP 12 at band 9.

Listening climbs differently from the other skills, because for most CLB levels Canada’s table asks for a higher IELTS band in listening. The table shows every other level: each level in between sits about halfway to the next row. Source: IRCC’s language test equivalencies.
