One path for every exam

Every exam on this page tests the same four skills: reading, listening, speaking and writing. So Glossom’s six courses are the same whatever your exam: vocabulary, grammar and the four skills, each with 20 levels.

Your exam changes the numbers you see. Your targets, your level in each course and the date on your path all show in your exam’s own scores, such as IELTS bands or PTE scores. Each level’s score comes from comparisons between exam scales that the exam makers and the Canadian government publish. You can change your exam at any time, and your progress stays.

Dates, levels and scores are estimates from your study path, not a promise of your exam result.

Study abroad

Universities and colleges ask for one of these. Check which exams and scores your school accepts before you choose.

IELTS Academic

Four parts in about 2 hours 45 minutes, with a band from 1 to 9 for each skill. Speaking is a short conversation with an examiner. Glossom’s levels are built on IELTS bands: each half band is two levels.

The TOEFL iBT® test

ETS changed the TOEFL iBT® test on 21 January 2026. Each of its four sections, and the test as a whole, now gets a score from 1 to 6 in half steps. Reading and listening adapt to your answers. In speaking you repeat sentences you hear and answer an interviewer on screen, with no time to prepare. In writing you build sentences from given parts, write an email and add a post to a class discussion.

Glossom’s speaking drills have you repeat short sentences after a model voice and read short texts aloud. Its writing includes practical messages and short opinions on a question, and every speaking and writing answer gets feedback from an AI coach.

TOEFL iBT® scores for each Glossom level (Glossom’s estimate)

Level 134.554.55

Built from the score comparisons ETS publishes for the new scale (the TOEFL iBT® score scale update, on ets.org), which also compare it with the older 0 to 120 scale. The table shows every other level: each level in between sits about halfway to the next row.

PTE Academic

About two hours on a computer at a test centre, with a score from 10 to 90 for each skill. Many tasks count for two skills at once: repeating a sentence you hear counts for listening and speaking.

The Duolingo English Test

About an hour, online at home. The questions adapt to your answers, and you get a score from 10 to 160 with a score for each skill.

Cambridge English: B2 First, C1 Advanced and C2 Proficiency

Three exams, each aimed at one level of the CEFR, from B2 to C2, with results on the Cambridge English Scale. In Glossom you choose Cambridge English once and aim for the score your exam needs.

Move abroad

Governments ask for these for visas, permanent residence and citizenship. They set the scores, often for each skill, so check what your application needs.

IELTS General Training

The same listening and speaking as IELTS Academic, with everyday reading and a letter in place of the chart task. It uses the same bands, so Glossom uses the same levels.

PTE Core

Pearson’s test for Canadian permanent residence and citizenship: about two hours at a test centre, with everyday English, and emails in place of an essay. Pearson does not treat PTE Core and PTE Academic scores as the same, so Glossom keeps a separate table for each.

CELPIP General

A Canadian test taken on a computer in one sitting of under three hours, speaking included. Each skill gets a level up to 12, the same number as its Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB).

Work

The TOEIC® test

Employers use the TOEIC® test to measure English for work. It comes as two tests: the TOEIC® Listening and Reading test, with a score from 5 to 495 for each skill, and the TOEIC® Speaking and Writing tests, with a score from 0 to 200 for each.

Glossom’s practical messages, everyday conversations and short spoken answers build the English these tests measure. Its TOEIC® table starts from the minimum score ETS gives for each CEFR level, placed where IELTS puts the same level.

What Glossom is not

Questions

Which exam should I take?

The one your university, employer or immigration application asks for. Many accept several exams, and some ask for a minimum score in each skill. Glossom then gives you a target in each skill.

Can I change my exam later?

Yes. Change it in Your Path at any time. Your levels and the work you have done stay; only the scores you see change.

Are Glossom’s scores exam results?

No. They are Glossom’s estimates, from published comparisons between exam scales. Only the exam itself gives you a result.
