What the Duolingo English Test tests

You take the Duolingo English Test online, at home, in about an hour. It adapts as you go: the questions get harder or easier from your answers. Most questions are short, many under a minute, and the four skills are mixed all the way through. You may not use notes, and you keep your eyes on the screen. At the end you record a short speaking sample and write a short text, which the schools you send your results to can see.

Your score runs from 10 to 160 in steps of 5. You also get a score for each skill, and four more that each combine two skills. Results usually arrive within two days. Dates, prices and the test itself are on the Duolingo English Test website.

How Glossom prepares you

The Duolingo English Test asks for many short answers, on the spot. Glossom’s practice is short too, and it builds the skills under the test rather than copying its questions.

Glossom has no full practice tests in the format of the Duolingo English Test. Before your test day, try a full timed practice in that format too.

Glossom levels and Duolingo English Test scores

Glossom’s table comes from Duolingo’s published comparison of its scores with IELTS, skill by skill. Each skill climbs at its own pace: writing starts lowest, because the comparison puts IELTS 4 writing anywhere from 10 to 60.

Questions

Is Glossom made by Duolingo?

No. Glossom is independent and not connected to Duolingo. It prepares you for the Duolingo English Test as it does for the other exams it supports.

Can I take the Duolingo English Test in Glossom?

No. You take the test on Duolingo’s own website. Glossom helps you prepare, and its scores are estimates, not test results.

What score should I aim for?

The one your school asks for. Your overall score is the average of your four skill scores, so if a school asks for 120, a target of 120 in each skill is a good start. Some schools also set a minimum for each skill.
